Don't mess with Grandma.
Grandma Gatewood was the first woman to solo thru hike the Appalachian Trail in 1955. She would end up hiking several long distance trails including the AT 3 times, starting at the age of 67. She also hiked the Buckeye Trail and was instrumental in building, maintaining, and promoting the trail. Emma Gatewood was from Ohio and is an icon and inspiration in the outdoors. The original ultralight backpacker, she hiked in Keds, with a small sack for her sew kit, shower curtain, and a few essentials. She is a survivor of domestic abuse, and total badass that forged her own path forward. Why? "Because I wanted to" she said.
